Unfortnately, sometimes when

Unfortnately, sometimes when taking a medication it can cause side effects. In the case of ciprofloxacin, a powerful antibiotic that can be used to treat a variety of infections, one of the side effects could possibly be an upset stomach.

This doesn't mean that the medication isn't working or that you are allergic to the medication, it simply means that in a small portion of patients who take ciprofloxacin, they may experience this particular reaction. Although uncomfortable, an upset stomach in and of itself is not alarming. If the pain is not severe and dissipates over time then no treatment is necessary.

If the upset stomach persists, it may be alleviated by switching medications. For this, you'd need to consult with your healthcare provider. It may or may not be appropriate.

Some things to avoid as treatments for upset stomach while on ciprofloxacin are baking soda and calcium or magnesium antacids. Baking soda can cause rebound acidosis and although it may decrease pain initially, it may increase pain over time. Calcium or magnesium-containing antacids can decrease the absorption of ciprofloxacin through a process called chelation. This could decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic and even cause treatment failure.

If you experience severe pain, cramping, diarrhea, black tarry stools, or bright red blood from the rectum, or a fever greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit, these are signs to seek urgent medical attention.

On the other hand, if you were being treated for an ailment of the gastrointestinal tract, the upset stomach may have already been present. If this is the case, it should resolve as the course of treatment completes.

One final note - don't discontinue the ciprofloxacin without talking first with your healthcare provider. The risk of incomplete treatment may be greater than the risks associated with an upset stomach.
