There are many prescription,
There are many prescription, over-the-counter, and even herbal remedies that may increase blood pressure.
Substances that increase blood pressure are usually stimulants and affect neutrotransmitters like norepinephrine.
Common culprits would be pseudoephedrine and its derivatives and caffeine. These ingredients are in some headache medications and cold remedies.
When looking at natural products, if you see ingredients including ephedra, bitter orange, green tea, or guarana, this could be a clue that blood pressure may be affected.
Appetite suppressants like phentermine or antidepressants like venlafaxine may also increase blood pressure. Medications with high sodium content, like some antacids, may also contribute to increased blood pressure.
This list is by no means exhaustive. If you have experienced an increase in blood pressure and have recently started taking a new medication or herbal product, be sure to monitor your pressure and stay in communication with your regular healthcare professional.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80 or below. If your blood pressure is within this range, regardless of any supplements you are taking, it would be considered generally well controlled. If it is above this number, medical intervention may be necessary. Check with your healthcare professional before discontinuing or starting any new medications or natural remedies.
