Fever is defined as elevated

Fever is defined as elevated body temperature above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit but however guidelines define a fever by its severity. A fever is mild between 100 and 102, moderate between 102 and 104, and high when above 104 degrees Fahrenheit as taken orally. Fever in pediatric patients is often confusing because although usually linked to infection, it can arise in children for many reasons other than illness. One cannot say that any fever is “okay” because it does indicate that something is going on physiologically. However, most fevers are beneficial and help the body heal. Recommendations state that a fever should not be treated in a child until it is over 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit and the child is experiencing discomfort. Fevers are not usually dangerous until they are over 104 degrees or they are accompanied with a change in behavior or consciousness. If your child is not responding to you or making eye contact, this may indicate a more serious condition. Also, if the fever persists for many days, even if it is low grade, it may be prudent to contact your regular pediatrician. When in doubt, contact your doctor, but in general, if the fever is mild or moderate it is usually serving a beneficial function rather than causing harm.
