There are a myriad of natural remedies that have been used with some success to treat acne scars. My first recommendation is that you check out both the acne page and the scars page here on GrannyMed.com. There you can read about some specific natural remedies as well as past questions and answers from previous users.

In general, the success of natural treatments for acne and acne scars will depend on the severity of your scars and generally require consistent use for an extended period of time as they work slowly and gently.

If your scars are discolored or hyperpigmented (darker than the normal surrounding skin), a product that lightens the scar is preferable. A natural option for this would be lemon juice which is thought to work as a bleaching agent. Lemon juice has the added benefit of providing alpha hydroxy acids, which are chemical exfoliants and aid in the removal of dead skin cells. In addition, you can make a paste of lemon juice, honey, and sugar and apply it to the scars. The sugar acts as a mechanical exfoliant and the honey soothes the skin.

In addition, people have used topical vitamin A, vitamin E, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender oil, and oral Vitamin C supplementation to support scar healing and reduction. There is also a naturally derived over-the-counter product that uses Allium Cepa, also known as Cepalin, an onion extract that has been demonstrated to reduce scars.

All treatments, though likely beneficial, can also pose a risk. The ones suggested here may rarely cause skin irritation, photosensitivity, or contact dermatitis. When considering any of these options, be sure to consult with your regular healthcare professional to determine the best one for your particular situation.
