Please note that I am not a physician and cannot diagnose any medical conditions. Even if I could, it would be imprudent to do so without a physical examination and proper testing. That being said, the most cited cause for leg cramps is usually low blood potassium, or hypokalemia. However, this may or may not be the cause of your problem, especially with a complication like diabetes.

I would recommend that you get this checked out with your regular healthcare professional as it could be a symptom of an underlying health problem. The leg cramps could be caused by anything from dehydration, to a kidney problem that causes inordinate loss of potassium, to a medication you are on for the diabetes, or even a complication of diabetes itself. For instance, some medications often used in diabetes cause the kidneys to excrete potassium. Also, one potential consequence of uncontrolled diabetes is nerve damage that can present as nerve pain, often in the legs. This may be mistaken for a cramping sensation. Or, it could be something as simple as enduring strenuously work-outs and not taking in adequate water and salt replacement.

As you can see, there are many possible causes of leg cramps. If your healthcare professional determines it is due to hypokalemia, you may work with your doctor to increase your intake of potassium. Although some foods do provide this mineral, dietary changes alone may not be enough to correct potassium loss. Sometimes prescription strength potassium supplementation is required. Many times eating bananas is recommended to increase potassium, but it could take something like seven bananas a day, which would be inconvenient to say the least, to get adequate potassium.
