An overactive thyroid would indicate to me that the thyroid is producing thryroid hormone in excess. This is a fairly rare condition and is called hyperthyroidisim. Hypothyroidism is much more common and occurs when insufficient thyroid hormone is produced.

In hyperthyroidism, people tend to lose weight, have low body temperatures and feel cold all the time, and can develop a condition called exophthalmous in which the eyes protrude and make a person look "bug-eyed."

Hypothryroidism is more likely to be associated with weight gain and hair loss, brittle nails, and thin nails.

It would be important to know which condition you may be experiencing before recommending any particular home remedies. In general, hypothryoidism is usually mild or subclinical and does not present a medical emergency though if levels get low enough, it may become a more serious problem and it most certainly affects one's quality of life. People with low thyroid hormone levels are often tired and lack energy.

Consult with your regular healthcare provider to determine what is going on for you. There are natural ways to manage low thyroid hormone, but high thyroid is a more serious condition and may require medication.
