What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by the bacteria present in dental plaque. It is not considered a "major" problem but it can lead to further infection and gum disease if left untreated. It can also be symptomatic of diabetes, smoking, medication side effects, and other systemic diseases. The most obvious symptom is gums that bleed and hurt after flossing. See a dentist if you have persistent gingivitis.
