What Causes Diarrhea?

diarrhea
"Fi, la laide"
Pigal, Edmé Jean, 1798-1872

Diarrhea is defined as loose, watery stools, often accompanied by abdominal cramps. As most of us know, the severity of this condition can vary widely. An occasional bout of diarrhea is not so serious. But diarrhea caused by a virus or disease that lasts a long time can be a serious problem, resulting in severe dehydration. Diarrhea is caused by myriad factors: viruses, bacterial infections, food intolerances, parasites, medications and bowel disorders. Because this is such a universal problem, there are many popular home remedies for diarrhea. However, please visit a doctor if you have diarrhea that lasts more than a day or is extremely painful.
