Medicinal Value of Ginger

The medicinal value of ginger is varied and high. Used for a variety of medical conditions, it has been found to be most effective for morning sickness as well as nausea and vomiting after surgery. It is also possibly effective for motion sickness.

The medicinal value of ginger hasn't been proven for every condition for which it is used. The medicinal value of ginger may include treatment for nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, migraine headaches, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, colic, upset stomach, gas, appetite, cough, bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, baldness, high blood pressure and toothaches.

One important feature of the medicinal value of ginger is that it is quite safe. Not only has it been used in several clinical trials, but people have used it in cooking for many hundreds of years. It may even be safe as a supplement in preganancy.

The medicinal value of ginger is thought to be conferred by gingerol, gingerdion, and shogaol. These active chemicals seem to lower fever and inflammation as well as decrease cough and pain and fight bacterial and fungal infections.

The medicinal value of ginger as an anti-nausea medication seems to be caused by 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, and galanolactone, though their exact mechanism of action is unknown. These chemicals may affect serotonin receptors in the ileum; these are the same receptors targeted by newer anti-nausea medications.

The medicinal value of ginger as an agent in the treatment of arthritis may be caused by an ability to inhibit the same inflammation pathways targeted by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
