Echinacea Benefits

echinacea.jpg

Echinacea is a type of flowering plant in the daisy family. It has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, in the treatment of such various ailments as snakebite, constipation, and infection. Research has been mixed on Echinacea's effectiveness, but it is purported to boost the immune system.

Proponents of the herb claim that although Echinacea does not cure or treat any diseases or conditions on its own, its main benefit is its ability to help the immune system fight bacteria and viruses to prevent or lessen illness. The thinking is that the herb actually stimulates the cells responsible for triggering the immune system, and in this way it can both stave off sickness and fight off any illness that is present.

The most common usage of Echinacea now is to treat and prevent the common cold. Though research has suggested that it is no more effective than placebo, many people swear by its effectiveness and take it religiously during cold and flu season.

Because research into Echinacea's effectiveness has been inconclusive for decades, it would be wise to talk to your healthcare provider before beginning an Echinacea regimen, to determine the potential risks and benefits of the herb to your body.
